Tools For Making Effective Presentations And Keeping Your Audience Engaged
When my children were growing up, they wrangled their way through quite an impressive menagerie of pets. In our house, human beings were generally outnumbered. We had to keep the animals happy and well-fed... or else.
My kids had a home away from home - it was called Theresa's Pet Store. If you wanted a shark, a frog, a snake, lizard, cat, dog, sheep or horse, Theresa could set you up. Rodents, insects, reptiles and amphibians - she had everything for sale except single cell organisms.
One day while my children and I were standing in line to make our latest acquisition, (it was either a bunny rabbit or a tarantula, I forget) I noticed a large barrel overflowing with a collection of chew toys. You know the type; those rawhide bones and donuts and knuckles and chew sticks that dogs go ape over. (By the way, an ape will never go dog, but I digress.) Then, as my eyes drifted to the right, I caught sight of the most disgusting spectacle ever beheld by me or any other upright vertebrate.
Pig ears.
A barrel of them. The real thing. Harvested from real pigs. (I assume post-mortem.) Dried-out, mummified, twisted triangles of cartilage, made from premium pork, naturally smoked for an irresistible flavor! For some inexplicable reason, I was drawn to the barrel for a closer look, praying that I was mistaken, that these hideous artifacts were indeed man-made, synthetic facsimiles of the real deal. But it was at that moment my worst fears were realized. I picked one up.
The ears were hairy.
Yes, each pig ear still sprouted delicate tufts of pig hair, and it occurred to me that it was highly unlikely that these hairs were carefully implanted one-by-one by underpaid artisans in some third world sweatshop below the Equator. It was now undeniable. Actual, pig body parts for sale at Theresa's pet shop. Enjoyed by discerning canines everywhere! Delicious, nutritious and satisfying - hairy, chewy, pig ears!
This delightful memory was triggered the other morning as I stared at my face in the bathroom mirror while shaving. As the light glared off the top of my bald head, I noticed the hair growing out of my ears. It was then I was struck by the cruelest of ironies: the same biological process that is responsible for male pattern baldness causes unwanted hair to appear elsewhere on the anatomy. It's almost as if the amount of hair on the body remains constant - it just changes location. Back, shoulders, inside the nose, outside the nose and yes, you guessed it - the ears.
Thankfully, guys have a variety of options. Ear hair can be shaved, plucked, waxed or zapped with electricity. Bottom line: it must be dealt with. Denial is not an option. The only alternative is leaving the house each morning looking like a lynx in a three-piece suit.
In the past 15 years, I have delivered uncountable presentations and spoke at numerous public forums, conferences and seminars. And equipped with what I learnt at British Foreign Office Training, I also tried to analyze various fellow presenters.
My observations confirm that particularly case of senior executive that did not go through a purpose-designed program, there always are three common key missing links:
- Control on body movements
- Voice variation
- Expressions
Know Who Your Listeners Are: If you are presenting to other professional colleagues who utilize and comprehend your technical language then you don't need to translate for them. However, if the decision-maker for a contract happens to be a CEO or HR Director who knows nothing about the intricacies of your expertise, then it is imperative for you to "dummy-down" the language to replace your technical jargon.
"There is no accounting for people's taste," I told him. "People value things and other people based upon a variety of factors. That range of factors runs the gamut from the very well reasoned and rational all the way to the extremely unreasonable and irrational."
I asked Bill if he had ever consulted with a professional stylist, someone who could advise him on wardrobe and personal grooming. He responded, "No, I have no use for anyone like that." I told him that every couple of years I retain a stylist to assist me in such matters. Then I said, "If you change your mind, let me know and I'll recommend someone." Bill's response was resolute: "Well, it's highly unlikely that will ever happen." As I looked at him in frustration I could've sworn one of his nose hairs grew a quarter inch.
Bill complained about how business owners will often reject him out of hand, even though he is immensely competent, trustworthy and effective at achieving positive outcomes related to investment banking. Instead, they choose the smartly groomed "pretty boy" wearing the $5,000 suit, only to learn later that Mr. GQ failed to achieve their desired outcome. After losing several precious months, wasting lots of money and suffering great emotional anxiety will these clients admit to themselves that they made a poor choice? Or when the time comes to hire someone else will they make the same mistake?
Write from your heart:
Often I have seen people delivering presentations or speeches written by others. For trained and experienced presenters, this is okay, however if you have not contributed towards developing the presentation or speech, speaking from your heart will be too challenging, hence creating an impact too will not be possible.
Avoid reading from paper:
I am not a fan of reading from a written paper. Fine to do it only in case of a specific government level speech or expressing point of view, but for any other presentation, if you read from a paper, you are inviting a reputational disaster!
Practice:
Okay, here is the key - as I mentioned above, for making highly effective presentations, extensive practice is unavoidable. And when I talk about practice, I am not only suggesting "speaking practice" but also reviewing the flow and carefully thinking about expected questions and how to respond to these questions. Surprisingly, very few presenters follow this strict rule.
It was quite obvious to me that Bill was in denial about his appearance and thus unwilling to polish himself up to improve his chances in "the beauty contest" for new clients. So I suggested that he write a book that helps business owners and management teams gain greater knowledge of the details, expenses and time associated with making their business more saleable, transferable or investment worthy. That would probably be the most effective thing to do, as it would educate potential clients and improve their discernment. Bill's attention to detail, his comprehensive understanding, wisdom and value would be clearly articulated and stand in contrast to those less capable "pretty people" with their hollow promises of "easier and cheaper". And his ear hair could be retouched out of his photo on the book cover.
When I suggested this to him, he acknowledged it was a great idea. Then he said, "Once I graduated from law school, I vowed that I would never again write a paper or thesis, so there's no way I'd ever write a book."
I watched as that nose hair grew another quarter inch.
Albert Einstein, the hairiest of geniuses, offered up this bit of wisdom: "One definition of insanity is to continue doing the same thing while expecting a different result." Well, without putting his wisdom down on paper and sharing it with the world, hairy-eared Bill is destined to bang his head against the same wall, over and over, losing one beauty contest after another to intellects far inferior to his. But Bill's ears were never really the problem. It's what's between the ears that counts. Now, let that sink in for a moment before you answer this question...

preparing yard for gardening, composting help?
I used to garden organically a lot, & stopped gardening for the past 3 yrs. No one goes into the backyard which is grown over with very tall grass and BIG weeds & is ruled by the dog... and her poop.
I've been wanting to prepare the soil and begin a small garden in the yard before the warm weather comes.
Where's a good place to start with the grass and weeds?
What's a cheap easy way to build a small fence to keep the dog out of it? I don't have to worry about the dog destroying it.
I've never really composted on a large scale before, I just turn banana peels & small stuff into the soil. Where's a good place to start? Will the neighbors notice the smell? (I don't own a composting bin or anything)
I used turn coffee grounds into the dirt because it seemed to help my plants and my grandmother told me it keep the ants away (we have a HORRIBLE and problem), does it really keep the ants away?
I'm 16, don't have much money & no one will be helping.
Well, kudos for wanting to start a real garden at your age first of all! A noble passtime for a young person, and something that can turn into a lifelong passion, or even a career!
If you have dog poo all over your lawn, I'd recommend removing as much of it as possible prior to starting and dispose of it. Raw poo can harbour nasty germs that you don't want around your plants that will grow your produce. Poo CAN be composted and used... but dog poo is a poor choice, and not really worth the risk...
A dog can be trained to poo in certain places... but if you have your heart set on a fence, try snow fencing or chicken wire. Both will cost you money, but they will look like a fence. Also, netting used for climbing plants such as beans can be strung to make a cheap fence. If you don't really care wht your fence looks like, go to local department stores that get shipments of products on pallets. They are still made out of wood in some places (alot are made of plastic these days), and some stores actually PAY people to take them away in quantity. If you can get some wooden pallets, you can piece them together with a few nails to make a quick, cheap fence. If you're really ambitious (and I think you are), you can take the pallets apart and make a fence that looks like a fence should... but this will take a long time, require some new nails and alot of elbow grease!
As for the grass and weeds, if you have sod, take it up and compost it. Sod is an excellent addition to a successful compost heap. It contains the microbes needed to start the composting process and alot of plant material that they will want to feed on. The weeds should mostly come with the sod. Plants with tap roots (one long root that looks kind of like a carrot), like dandelions, may stay behind after the sod is taken up and grow new weeds. The main thing to remember with weeds is not to let them go to seed. There is an old saying that, "one year's seeding is worth seven years weeding." Weed seeds can lie dormant in the soil until they get appropriate conditions to sprout a new plant that'll make thousands more seeds... dig your weeds and add them to your compost heap.
If you add only organic materials to your compost heap, there should be no bad smells. Only if you add animal parts (chicken bones, beef stock, fat... etc) should you get an odour. Don't worry about composting on a big scale. Compost what you can. Composting alone can be a daunting task for a beginning gardener. If it seems like work, you're doing it too much! A great way to make a cheap compost bin is to get some heavy chicken wire and make it into a circle. Fill it with the materials you want to compost. When it's full, wait a while. Then, take the chicken wire from around the pile, put it back together again just next to the pile, and then put everything from the old pile back into the bin. This is called "turning" your pile. The advantage of this is you will add oxygen to the material which gives new life to the bacteria breaking down your soon-to-be compost. They will reward you by working faster! A compost pile will heat up because of the activity of these bacteria... ALOT! If the pile grows cold on the inside, it needs to be turned.
As for ants, you've got to hit them where they live... the nest. If you can't find a way to live in harmony with them, simply dig up the nest, ants and all, and dump it somewhere far away from your garden. There are poisons and "barrier" products (borax and diatomaceous earth, respectively) that I have used, but nothing works as well as removing the ants from the equation entirely. Well... there was one thing... ants *LOVE* sugar... I found that I eliminated the problem of ants in my house by keeping my recycleable pop cans and bottles outside in the yard... as long as there were some there, the ants found their way into them and not into my house!
You mentioned preparing the soil... that's never an easy chore. You'll need some tools, and still more elbow grease. Once your sod is up, you may want to ask around for a sympathetic fellow gardener with a tiller if you can use it to till your soil. Maybe offer to do a few weeks weeding for them in return for their kindness. If your garden is not going to be that big, a few hand tools will be all you need... a shovel, rake and a garden fork. Used carefully and cared for after their use, even an inexpensive garden tool will last several seasons.
Looking at what I've typed... I had better stop here... you shouldn't. Get a good gardening book or two and read them cover to cover. I recommend Eliot Coleman's "New Organic Grower." About everything you'd need to know is in there. What isn't is in Barbara Damrosch's "The Garden Primer" which is coming out soon in a new edition. The old edition should be around in some good used book shops.
